Experience and Meaning of Group Altruistic Activities Among Long-Term Care Residents (Research) (Report) Joseph Haley, Rachel Moravec, Erin Young, Holly Cipriani read online review & book description:

Introduction Although many institutions have activity programmes, older adults who reside in long-term care (LTC) facilities may not find the programmes to be tailored to individual physical, psychological and social needs (Winston 1981). For these adults, restricted opportunities to engage in meaningful activities may contribute to a decreased sense of life satisfaction and a sense of role loss. In the study by Hatter and Nelson (1987) of nursing home residents, a significant positive relationship was found between task participation and the introduction of an altruistic activity, suggesting that altruistic activities are meaningful to residents and might affect positively the experiences of older adults in LTC facilities. Altruism has been defined as 'actions that: (a) are performed for the benefit of others and for the participants as ends in themselves, (b) emitted voluntarily, and (c) usually done for good of some sort' (Cipriani et al 2006, p47). Engagement in such meaningful occupations may increase a sense of autonomy, life satisfaction and role performance for these residents.
