Introduction Occupational therapy involves working with people across the life span who experience barriers to participation (World Federation of Occupational Therapists 2007). The fastest growing age group in the United Kingdom (UK) is those aged 80 years and over, who currently constitute 4.5% of the total population (National Statistics 2008). Estimates from the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB 2005) indicate that approximately 2 million people in the UK have significant sight loss, with 95% of these people aged over 65 years. A similar pattern has been noted in the United States (US), where it is estimated that approximately 26% of adults older than 75 years (3.2 million people) and 17% of adults between 65 and 74 years (2.6 million people) have low vision (Lethbridge-Cejku et al 2002).
