Law of Demand in Dowry Size, Status of Indian Women and Recent Wrong-Headed Policies. Indian Journal of Economics and Business read online review & book description:

Abstract We discuss economic reasons behind the murders of infant girls and brides in India, providing a historical perspective. Arranged marriages and relative shortage of gainfully employed grooms leads to excess supply of girls in the marriage market where the law of demand applies. Recent government rules for sonogram providers requiring that only about 50% of aborted fetuses should be female is well intentioned, but it will worsen the excess supply and will have several other unintended consequences and externalities due to worsening of the overpopulation problem in India and global warming. I include legislative initiatives to reduce size of the dowry, which is the main cause of discrimination against women in India.
