The genesis of this book was a chance visit to an Art Fair in late summer, 2012. The USA Presidential Election loomed and I sought refuge from the talking heads and talking points of the campaign. The antagonism of our modern society was palpable.
An idea for a project came to mind as I paused at an exhibit. During recent travel to ancient cultures, I was impressed by the simplicity and serenity of the people I encountered. Perhaps images captured during my travel carried messages of insight, inspiration and wisdom, if only I looked more deeply.
The people I met led simple lives. Their wants and needs were more basic than mine. They were not stressed by events half a world away. They were not befuddled by the double-speak of the talking heads. They had few possessions and few worries. Yet, they and I shared the full range of human emotion and common purpose in our pursuit of happiness.
My challenge was to discover literal messages hidden in the images of my travel. My skill set was skewed by a professional career that nurtured and exploited the left-brain. My formative years fostered the premise that feelings were “of the heart”. Ah, but the heart only pumps blood.
I now needed to explore the seldom-visited recesses of my right brain. I sought language from an image, from a feeling, from an instinct … slow to be disclosed and abstract by its nature. My project journey was rooted in feelings, not logic. And, the effort was at times daunting.
My search for meaning taught me many lessons. I found insights through meditation, trial and error. The process brought me happiness.
My wish is that you, too, will feel the insights and find joy, wisdom and peace in their message.
