This novella begins in the year 1856 as we follow the growth of a young French child, Dev Bonfils, and his maturation into a talented yet unrecognized artist. His life unfolds in the cities of Le Havre and Paris before the full- flowering of a radical new movement in the world of art.
A painting holiday in Holland embroils the now adult Dev in the fear-fueled workings of an insular, eccentric, time-obsessed village, Vondervottimeittiss. Edgar Allan Poe created this imaginary Dutch borough in his seven page satirical short story, The Devil in the Belfry. Here Dev, will become a beacon of hope for a misunderstood nine-year-old boy, Hans Groot.
Through plot twists and turns, the meaning of time, the acceptance of change, and the value of difference are explored. Old friends are reunited, new ones made, and the ultimate decision to express who you were born to be, is only embraced by those brave enough to take that stand, and fully willing to endure the consequences.
