Not a Man, and Yet a Man Whitman, Albery Allson read online review & book description:

In one respect, Albery A. Whitman's book of verse Not a Man, and Yet a Man is a fundraising tool for Wilberforce University.  Whitman clearly states this in his preface. It is also a marketing tool for the purpose of the university, which Whitman points out is "to inspire and increase in the pupil self-respect, self-control and self-development." However, these commercial goals do not detract from the quality of Whitman's work, nor should they. The quality of his poetry stands for itself. Like much of his other work, the poems in Not a Man, and Yet a Man concentrate on themes of freedom and the diversity of ethnicities in America. Whitman often parallels the plight of the Native American race with that of the African American race.
